The correct answer to this question would depend on which company comes up with creative and innovative ways to engage users. Though I feel at this point, number-wise, it will be very hard for Instagram to trump Facebook. One reason is because of the length of time, both apps have been around.
Facebook was launched in 2004, while Instagram was launched in 2010. This gave Facebook a six-year lead over Instagram to gain users, which shows because Facebook has billions of users. Meanwhile, Instagram has millions. Another reason is the type of content posted. Facebook seems to be more versatile and geared towards the young and old, while most Instagram users are young.

Definitely, I do think Instagram can take over Facebook in the user count. It’s a matter of time; Instagram will become the leading social media platform in the world. In fact, many experts are already predicting that Instagram will overtake Facebook in user statistics by 2020.
In 2017, Facebook lost over 2.5 million users under the age of 25 in the United States alone. Instagram, on the other hand, had over 800 million users between December 2016 and September 2017. This shows clearly that many users are gravitating towards the use of Instagram rather than Facebook. Instagram also offers a more mobile-friendly platform which gives its users a better experience. Hope you find this information helpful.
Usually, businesses can grow as long as they are adding new things to their product to make people to continue to use their product. The same can be said for social media sites. Facebook has been around for a long time. Therefore, it will most likely stay on top. However, it all depends upon whether Facebook can continue being popular with people. Instagram does not rank even close to the number of users that Facebook has.
Instead it has about one-third of the amount of users as Facebook. Instagram has a number of users in the millions whereas Facebook has a number in the billions. That is a big difference and therefore Instagram will most likely not overtake Facebook in the user count.

Instagram will catch up with Facebook sooner or later; Facebook is currently the leading social media platform because it is older than most social media platforms. However, Instagram is moving like wildfire soon to overtake Facebook. Although the present users of Instagram are just one-third of the Facebook users, it has gained wide recognition between the years of its usage, which shows that within a short period of time, Instagram will become the most used social media app.
In fact, studies done reveal that in the nearest future, Instagram will take over. Facebook was founded in 2004, which makes it over a decade now and a reason to be most used social media. Facebook gained 1 billion users in October 2012. However, Instagram gained 1 million users in two months; this statistics shows that Instagram will become the most used social media in no time. I hope you find this helpful.
