Is WeChat owned by the Chinese government?

WeChat is an app that has many different functions. It was created in 2010. Over time, it grew quickly among the Chinese people and then throughout the world. The company that began WeChat is called the Tencent Guangzhou Research and Project Center. It was made public the next year after it was created. Many people think that the Chinese government either made the app or owns it.

However, the Chinese government does have some control in that it supports this app. However, they don’t own it necessarily. It has become so popular that after one year, WeChat had over one hundred million users. The name was changed to make it easier. It was first Weixin and it changed to WeChat.
