There are several causes of cataract in the eyes. These causes include smoking and intake of alcohol, old age, trauma, radiation, genetics, inadequate vitamin C, medications, post-operative, and even skin diseases, plus some other diseases which can be metabolic and nutritional, congenital, and genetic syndromes. Skin is also an organ in the body, the largest organ actually; and some infections on this skin can have effect on the eyes, causing cataracts especially.
But how, which skin diseases can cause cataracts? The eye lens and the skin possess the same embryological origin, and they can be affected by some similar diseases. Some people develop shield ulcer cataracts occasionally due to eczema and atopic dermatitis infections on the skin. An autosomal recessive disorder is the ichthyosis skin disease which is associated with nuclear sclerosis and cuneiform cataracts. Another skin disorders that are associated with nuclear sclerosis and cuneiform cataracts are pemphigus and basal-cell nevus.
