Before diving into the reason why smoking harms people’s lens, it is important to note that too much of smoking can result in a lot of diseases in the body. A cataract simply means a disease of the eye, causing its opacity or the clouding of the eye’s lens. Cataract can lead to blindness unless necessary treatments are done on it. Different researches have shown that smoking has the tendency of affecting the area of the retina known as Macula. When this is affected, it leads to what is known as Macular Degeneration.

This will, in turn, reduce the sharpness of the eyes, activities like reading, driving will no longer be effectively carried out. Smoking increases your risk of having a cataract. While you might naturally develop this eyes defect, smoking will double your chance of having a cataract. Smoking can also cause the inflammation of the uvea, which is the eye’s middle layer, and this can increase your chance of developing a cataract.
