Our world is one of certificates and degrees, and the more that you have the more respect you get from the world. Furthermore, in some countries some professions are more valued than others, and this is the case with dentistry. Because in many countries becoming a dentist does not require extensive training, the field might not carry the respect that others do. Again, this is a world where your credentials can open doors for you to any place, and in some circles, while dentistry is a good profession, it does not carry the same respect as other professions.
Then, the actual experience of going to the dentist is not always pleasant. When the check-up ends in a good report, the person goes home feeling good. However, whether having your teeth cleaned or enduring some other procedure, many find the smells of dental work and the feeling of someone tooling around in your mouth unpleasant. Finally, the costs and the hassles associated with dealing with insurance can be other reasons many do not respect dentists.
