DNA was first isolated in 1869 by Friedrich Miescher and first identified in 1953 by Francis Crick and James Watson. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is a molecule that has two chains coiled around each other. These coils form a double helix. DNA is important because it carries genetic instructions. These are used to help organisms and viruses grow, develop, function, and reproduce. Unable to be viewed by the naked eye or a light microscope, DNA strands can be viewed under an electron microscope, for it has a higher resolution.
