Yes, Bill Gates is a philanthropist. Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation they have not only contributed their money, but their time as well. He transitioned out of the full-time operations at Microsoft to work at the Foundation, and this was in 2008. The organization primarily focuses on tackling education and health issues in the United States with a lot of this work focusing on helping students prepare for college.
Lately, the Foundation’s most notable contributions has been his “Goalkeepers”, an annual report that examined benchmarks made in several areas related to public health (child mortality, malnutrition, and HIV). As a part of the report, Gates stated that infectious and chronic disease as a major health concerns in this era. In terms in donating money, he and Google founder Larry Page will donate $12 million to fund a universal flu vaccine. These awards were $2 million dollar grants awarded for inventive and bold proposals. They expect trials beginning in 2021.
