In totalitarianism, every part of an individual’s life is controlled and claimed by the state. There is little to no freedom and opposing government parties are prohibited. The term was formulated in the 1920’s by Giovanni Amendola, which he used to describe the new fascist state of Italy.
At first, the term was meant to be positive and refer to the optimistic goals of the state, but Western civilizations didn’t agree with it, causing it’s current negative connotation. Other recent examples of totalitarian states include Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany and the Kim’s dynasty in North Korea.
