It was during the reign of Justinian I (527–565 AD) that the Byzantine empire accessed and reached its greatest levels of success. They were able to reconquer a lot of the Roman western Mediterranean coast and the north African regions. In Europe, it was Italy, and Rome which they held for about two centuries.
During those times, the expansion of the kingdom was of great importance for the empire. The success of the kings or emperrors were measured with these factors in mind. When those kingdoms conquered other nations and expanded, they gained tax revenue and they were able to expand their trade to ever expanding areas. Since slavery was common, they also gained slaves from various countries. Thus, Justinian I was probably the most successful Byzantine king ever to have ruled.
One of the most successful Byzantine Kings is Justinian I. Justinian ruled from AD 527 to 565. The reason why he was successful is because of his creation of the Justinian code. According to the code, the emperor will be in charge of the rules and laws that will be followed throughout the whole empire.
He was able to create laws and rules that were beneficial for him and also the rest of the empire. He was able to create some laws that made it easier for trading to occur. The strong military also cannot be denied at that time. Of course, all rulers must come to an end and the time came when the Byzantine empire also crumbled.
