Under Roman law, slaves were considered as property of the owner. These slaves had no right as a person normally would. Educated and highly skilled slaves worked professional jobs, but still continued to be slaves. They were still considered as the property of their owners.
Slaves were gained primarily from the Roman military exploits of various nations. When they used former soldiers as slaves, that backfired on them. These former soldiers rebelled and even caused wars.
Although Roman citizens had full rights as humans and as citizens, slaves had none. Slaves were given corporal punishment, they were sexually exploited, tortured, and even executed without question. But as time went on, they did gain some legal protection, even the right to file a complaint against their masters.
During the ancient Roman empire, slaves were legal and under Roman law, they were considered as Rome’s property. Slaves were used to doing manual labor such as building new structures and tasked to perform domestic services and highly skilled jobs. Skilled or highly educated slaves were appointed to be accountants and physicians while unskilled slaves were put to work on mines, mills, and farms.
They also faced sexual exploitation, torture, and even execution. This is unlike the Roman citizens who were exempted from corporal punishment. Majority of the slaves were rebels and former soldiers from wars who were caught. When a slave attempts an escape, he or she would be hunted down and face consequences.
