The architectural designs of the Romans continue to be used in cities throughout the world even today. Their architectural legacy comes from the ancient Greeks. Together, these two styles formulate together into what is called Classical Architecture. The principles of Classical Architecture continue to be used by modern architects.
Here are some of the advancements. First and primary was the arch. Arches carry heavier weights than beams that are straight. This also allows for longer distances to be covered without more supporting columns. The Romans realized that a complete semi circle was not needed and they were able to construct long bridges with this method.
Domes also use the same kind of principles to cover bigger areas with no internal support. Another important development was the invention of concrete which allowed them to build without carving wood or stone. These are some of the basic and most important developments. There are others as well, but they are mostly further developments from these.
Roman style of construction has a great impact and contribution to the science of architecture. It originated from the Roman Republic in 509 B.C. to around 4th A.D. It is often get confused with the Greek architecture but it has a big and noticeable difference from the Greek’s. Roman architecture started the use of cement in making domes, arches, and pillars to emphasize grandeur while the Greek used a simple system yet most distinctive designs of columns made of limestone or marble.
During the Imperial Period, Rome was very prosperous, wealthy, and populated thus called for new architectural solutions that can be decorative yet strong. Hundreds of new structures were built immediately and became symbols of their Empire’s power.
