Alexander the Great really only attacked the country of India once. There were a series of battles throughout, as some of the kings refused to capitulate to him. There were several kings who allied themselves with Alexander before blood was spilled, and this saved their towns.
Others such as the strongholds of Massaga and Ora stood against Alexander and his army. The result was a total bloodbath, as every occupant was put to the sword and their cities reduced to mere rubble. As Alexander progressed through India, the toughest opponent he faced was King Porus.
Porus refused to yield to Alexander, and the battle between the two armies suffered massive losses. In all, Alexander fought between 6-8 battles in India. There may have been some smaller skirmishes that were not noted in the official records. The number of campaigns within India would have been higher had the army not mutinied against him, and demanded to return home.
