It is through his letters that we can really glean the most information about Beethoven. When he started to go deaf, he began to pull away from society. He found it degrading to have to ask people to repeat themselves or to speak louder. Through the remaining letters that we have, the true Beethoven emerges. We can see the fears, the hopes, the depression and so much more. He left a letter for his brothers which was to be opened after his death. There he lays out his feelings and the hopelessness that he felt.
The rejection of the woman he loved also fed into these feelings. He was rather hard on himself, as his father had been when he was a young boy learning to play different musical instruments. His letters, including one that was a love letter written to a married woman, allow us to feel what he was going through at the time. Although the love letter was never mailed, it has since come to light, and the contents revealed.
It is hard to ascertain all of his thoughts, as some of his papers were changed or destroyed by his former secretary, although the reason why is not fully known. It has been speculated that this was done to put Beethoven’s views more in line with those of his secretary, but this has not been firmly established.
