Musical critics have been extremely vocal in how they view Beethoven’s works. While Beethoven studied under Haydn and gained some valuable lessons from him, he eventually broke away from the standard convention of music composure.
The music that Beethoven composed broke many of the rules that were strictly adhered to at the time. His music has been listed as choppy, full of too many measures, not enough measures, and many more. The abrupt nature of some of his pieces led to criticism over time. When Beethoven was composing, musical critics were in their infancy, and so there were not the scathing reviews that we might see today.
There were some at the time who did not care for some of the music he wrote. However, critics have been more vocal in the last 50 years. The reviews vary depending on the type of music one prefers. Some find his music unbearable, while many find his work refreshing and quite different from some of the other pieces other writers produced around the same time.
Beethoven was able to overcome the social norm and produce music which has become among the most requested pieces of all time. Not only has his music survived, but it has been the inspiration for many inspiring musicians.
