Calcium is known for helping the body by making our bones get strong. However, it is also an element on the periodic table. Like other elements, it also has benefits and uses. Cement is often made out of a form of calcium. Cement is used in making sidewalks and keeping posts into the ground.

This is probably the most beneficial use of calcium that is used outside of the body. It is also considered a reducing agent. A part of cement is called mortar. Mortar is used in between bricks, so calcium helps when a builder is building a brick building. Paints and fluorescent lights also contain calcium. When paints are mixed, then contain some form of calcium. Other elements include deodorants and vitamin pills.

For generations, calcium was used for the essential ingredient in quicklime, with plaster the walls of buildings were made. This would be for poorer people for it did not have lasting quality. Later it was used to make cement which of course does last well.

It is important inorganically for fluoride, bromide, ferrocyanide, and nitrate. It can reduce acidity so is useful for pharmaceutical products. It is a reducing agent used in extracting metals, also for producing some where it is the allying agent. It is used in making glass.

Calcium carbonate is used medicinally to make antacid. It is also used as a phosphate binder which is use to treat hyperphosphatemia.

It is also used as an alloying agent for aluminium, beryllium, copper, lead and magnesium alloys.
Other applications include toothpaste, and fertilizer production.
