Everyone needs calcium. The main place to find calcium is in milk. When we are children, our parents always make us drink milk because it contains calcium. Calcium helps make our bones grow strong. Even though adults need strong bones, children’s bones are growing. They are actually weaker and softer than adult bones. However, some adults and children are lactose intolerant. So, they must get their calcium from other foods and drinks. Over average it is about 1,100 milligrams of milk per day. It varies slightly for women who are older than 50 years old and those who are younger than 50 years old. However, it is recommended that you do not get too much calcium or it could hurt your body.
Calcium is the most stored nutrient in the human body, mostly going to form or maintain bones, teeth and hair. About 99% is absorbed, or where a supplement is necessary because of aging or hypocalcima, 30% is absorbed. It is actually essential for human health.
Conversely, you can consume too much for well-being. Too much calcium, probably occurring because the individual is overdoing calcium supplements, can lead to constipation and kidney stones. The recommended amount is 2000 to 2500 milligrams per day.
The body needs calcium to maintain strong bones and teeth, for muscle contractions and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and body parts. The average body needs about 1000mg of calcium daily. However, there are special situation that may require more or less calcium daily.
A new born does not need more than 200 mg of calcium in a day. Children between the ages of 1 to 3 do not need more than 700 mg of calcium per day. Adults over 50 need an average of 1200 mg daily.
