The underlying cause why the Tsarist autocracy was overthrown in 1917 was the backward economic condition of the country. In order to finance the war, the government printed millions of ruble noted, and by 1917, inflation had made prices increase.
This made the country unable to sustain the war effort against the powerful and industrialized Germany. The war resulted in a devastating loss of morale within the Russian army and the general population of Russia.
When the Tsar was faced by problems during the First World War, he couldn’t cope and he fell out of power. The fall of the tsarist autocracy led to the rise of Marxian socialism under Lenin. It sparked the beginning of a new era in Russia, which had effects on countries around it.
