It’s better to be more practical than emotional at your workplace. Being too emotional at work can seriously harm your professional reputation as well as your productivity. Stressful situations are common in a workplace. If you are too emotional, it may become harder to manage your emotions under certain conditions.

Being practical makes you think of the long term effects of your actions, which is what matters the most in your organization.

You shouldn't prefer to be one or the other. Both are necessary in everyday life, both are necessary in relationships. I suspect you ask this because you want to do something that will hurt another person's feelings.

The practical course is to meet your own wishes or needs. The emotional one is to consider how another person will feel. I cannot decide this for you, if this is the case. You must sit quietly and decide what is right, and/or what is necessary.

Simple example; it might hurt a partner if you miss their birthday by visiting your relative. If the relative is sick, or you have a rare chance for a visit, that might take priority. You probably know inside yourself what is right and/or what is sensible.

For instance, if you hurt your partner by leaving him/her early, but you need to be home in time for a reasonable night's sleep before an important day's work the next day.
