Depression is present in all age groups but it goes undiagnosed and untreated mostly in children, this is because the symptoms of depression in children vary. Early signs of depression in a child is masked by acting out or having an angry behaviour.
Many display consistent sadness and low mood, social withdrawal, change in appetite – either increase or decrease, difficulty concentrating, change in sleep – sleeplessness or excessive sleep, physical complains that don’t respond to treatment, increased sensitivity to rejection, loss of interest in school, poor academic performance, feeling of worthlessness and guilt, thoughts of suicide or death.
Keep in mind that many children continue to function reasonably well in a structured environment but if the depression is significant, they will be a noticeable change in the social behaviour of the child.
Parents and guardians should watch out for these symptoms and take necessary steps (such as visiting a therapist) before it gets significant.
