During the Revolutionary War in 1778, George Washington wanted to spy on the British and get information about what the British were doing in New York City.

So, he ordered a few members to go into New York City and learn about their strategies. The two main men of this Culper Ring included two men who used the last name of Culper. Since George Washington ordered this spy ring to happen, he became known as America’s first spymaster.
