John Paul Jones was definitely acknowledged for his contributions and leadership skills during the American Revolutionary War. Probably the most beneficial and greatest contribution to the American Revolutionary War was his battle with the Serapis.

Instead of fleeing and retreating after being damaged by the British ship, Jones commanded his ship, USS Bonhomme Richard to ram right into it. Since their ships were attached, the British ship finally surrendered.

John Paul Jones was awarded the gold medal by the US Congress, but it wasn’t for a century later. His character and the fact that the soldiers that were under him did not always follow his directions led the U.S. to believe that he was not a respectable man. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that the U.S. realized his contributions.
