For many years, the Middle Passage took slaves from African tribes by purchasing them and then sailing them in tight quarters to the North American plantations. During the trip, many slaves died due to disease and exhaustion.

Many others would die on the plantations because they were not given any money or medicine for the diseases and sicknesses they would catch. There were many people who were involved in the slave trade by sailing the ships from Africa to North America.

One famous slave ship commander was John Newton. He would later realize his mistake and write the famous song, Amazing Grace. Another famous slave ship worker was John Paul Jones. He was not the captain of the ship like Newton, but he was a second or third mate.
