The British ship was called Serapis after the mythological god. When the two ships started to battle, John Paul Jones made a great decision to attach his ship to the Serapis. Then he was able to take over the Serapis.

In some ways, this was a very strategic way to defeat the Serapis that had already overtaken his ship. Due to this way to achieving success, John Paul Jones’s capture of the Serapis would be called his greatest victory. He also made it look like he had commanded the Serapis to the Dutch to avoid capture by them.
