Many people living in the United State prior to the Revolutionary War were immigrants or their parents were. This is because America was so new. Not many people lived here in the generations prior. So, it is not unusual that John Paul Jones was born outside of America. Jones was born in Scotland.

Scotland is a country that is part of an island. This means that ocean water is located to most sides of this country. Therefore, Jones had access to water at an early age. He began to learn about sailing early on.

As a matter of fact, he started sailing when he was 13 years old. From that point on, he continued to work by sailing in ships. With this experience, he had an advantage over the British.
