What happens once AI applications become sentient?

There is a lot of speculation about what some of the possible outcomes are if AI (Artificial Intelligence) applications become sentient. Sentience includes the ability to think, feel, and experience things. Things like humans and animals are examples of two sentient beings. Computers are not considered to be sentient at this time and there will probably not be any sentient AI beings for decades to come still.

Some people are afraid of AI applications becoming sentient but most people think AI applications would be allies and not enemies. It would likely mean that there would be some interesting changes in the economy as AI systems began to integrate into society.
