It was celebrated to honor Janus an ancient roman god of beginning. The god was a two faced god who has a face that can see the future and another that sees the past.

People didn’t celebrate New Year in the past. It is believed that the earliest record of the celebration was in Mesopotamia, circa around 2000BC. It traditionally became a religious feast in the 1900s, and the night of December 31, is celebrated and called the New Year Eve.
The modern celebration comes from an Ancient Roman god Janus (the god of doorways and beginnings) a two faced god (one face looking to the past and the other is peered forward to the future) whom the month of January was named after. There is no astronomical reason to celebrate January 1 as New Year’s celebration.
