In his lifetime, Shakespeare had more popular success with his histories whereas today Hamlet and King Lear are more revered.

As for the comedies, the humour of a situation of conflict is still funny today, with lovers misled about who or what their beloved is.
The Winter's Tale and The Tempest Shakespeare combines a mixture of comic and tragic styles, incorporating elements of both romance and realism in a manner which differs distinctly from the style of his earlier plays.
