In April 1564, William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, an attractive town with a river not far from Oxford. He was baptised, and is buried, in Holy Trinity church there. His house, the house of his mother and the house of his wife and the grammar school he attended are all preserved and on the tourist route for visiting.
Stratford-upon-Avon has a modern theatre devoted to his works. Not surprisingly, the seats are booked up well in advance and the town is busy year round. There is now a Shakespeare Birthplace Trust where many relevant historic documents are lodged.
