There are always some who enjoy demolishing shibboleths. However, this is quite difficult when a writer has been revered by scholars and readers and theatre-goers world-wide for over four hundred years! Shakespeare's use of language has shaped etymologists' work, his characters' pronouncements upon the human condition as well as their personalities are referred to constantly.
His plays continue to be enjoyed generation, after generation for their humour, drama and tragedy. His sonnets remain most highly valued. We have to know who (and of what status) is the rater, before we can assessed if he or anyone else is over-rating Shakespeare.
