There are many variations of the story about how the word “cocktail” got its name. However, there is one story that sticks out. Back in the 1870s when cocktails were first being introduced, it is highly believed that when you mix two or more liquors together plus a few other ingredients, it would cock your tail. This means that it would perk you up because of the alcohol in it.
The name cocktail was actually had a bad connotation to it for quite some time. At one point, ordering a cocktail would mean that you would ingest something that you perk you up. It was better to order a straight whiskey or some other alcohol instead of a cocktail due to its name.
