The concept of sustainable tourism came into existence because of the need to protect the nature and the environment from destruction. Tourism hardly played any role in maintaining and protection the environment and nature before the 21st century.
In 2001, rules were established for biodiversity and sustainable development. The United Nations declared 2002 as year of Ecotourism.
Even before this time, sustainable development was already playing an important role at grassroots levels. A lot of action groups, NGOs and environmental associations were developing sustainable tourism before much recognition on the international level.
