Santa Claus is also known as Father Christmas, Kris Kringle or St. Nicholas. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in Patara near Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Empire which is the modern day Demre, Turkey.
St. Nicholas was popular for giving gifts to people and he was also known for travelling around the world to help the needy and the sick. He devoted his entire life to Christianity. He is usually portrayed as a bearded Bishop.
The remains of St. Nicholas are in Italy. The site of his remains became a pilgrimage site for the devote.
