Periodontal diseases are also known as Gum diseases or periodontitis. They are diseases or conditions that affect the hard and soft tissues that support the teeth and maintain the position of the jaw. It is mostly caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque to build up on the teeth and harden.

When this untreated, these diseases can lead to alveolar bone loss and tooth loss. These diseases are one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.

Scientists have also linked periodontal diseases to some other health problems, this include; heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and rheumatoid arthritis.
