The ocean is generally divided into vertical zones by physical and biological conditions. The ocean is divided into 3 major zones. The pelagic zone, photic zone and the aphotic zone.
The pelagic zone is the open region of the ocean; it is further divided based on depth and light penetrance.
The photic zone is next after the pelagic zone; it includes the region from the surface of the region to about 200m.
Aphotic zones are regions exceeding 200m depth.
Other subzones of the ocean include; epipelagic, mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones.
