English had a lot of influences before it became the English language that we are familiar with right now. There are a lot of people who say that English was somewhat influenced by old Germanic languages such as the Old-Norse and the Proto-Germanic. There are some words that are also borrowed from other Germanic languages.

Over the years, the language was further influenced by a lot of other factors such as Greek and even French. There is a bit of Latin that may also be mixed in with the English language that we are familiar with today. Take note that the English language is slightly more similar to German as compared to French.
