The day gives women the opportunity to express things that they like to express. A lot of what people like to express is of the form "that's impressive, for a woman." A day gives them the excuse to say that. It's not something that impresses me a lot, and that's not because I'm not a sexist at all. I prefer to focus on personality and accomplishments first and foremost, and their gender is way down the list of concern.
I'm more of an individualist, who personally believes identity politics divides people than unites them and makes no room for free thought and common sense, regardless of who they are. Some people think it raises consciousness or something to say, "Look! There's a woman who can rebuild an engine or a faucet! Imagine that!" I don't agree with them, but it is not possible or wise to make them stop. Giving them a day to do this seems to make the whole enterprise a lot more tolerable. Maybe a month would work as well.

Yes, women need a day to celebrate because there are different women who have fought against equality for a long time. There was a time when the only use for women is to breed new men and to take care of their homes. Now, women can also earn their own money, do things that please them, and so much more.
It took years before women started to become respected in society. In fact, up to now, there are still women who are being discriminated even if they have already done so many things. The fact that they are still thriving and are still trying to prove their worth makes them worthy of receiving a day to celebrate.
