What is the next number in the following series 1, 2, 2, 4, 4, 6, 8, 8, 16, __?

I arrived at 88.

I added the top number and left corner number of the triangles together, then multiplied the sum by the right corner number to equal the number inside the triangle.

5+5= 11. 11x2 = 22

7+8= 15. 15x3= 45

3+4= 7. 7x9= 63

It worked 3 out of 3 times so I figured it was the pattern, can someone dissect the other method?
