The CIO of a company is responsible for information technology and the company’s IT department. Back in the 1950s and 1960s when companies first began on their computing journeys the role of CIO was primarily data processing and then between the 1960s and 1980s companies like IBM would come into the workplace and install mainframe computers that would store all the information that the company needed to run their day-to-day operations.
During that timeframe, the CIOs job was to budget for funds to allow these systems to come into the workplace make sure they were delivered on time make sure the company that sold the system to them provides what the outside vendor says it will. Then we come into the future, and the World Wide Web in the early 1990s and the CIO at that point became involved in business strategies to help the company take advantage of the Internet which was traveling at lightning speed and changing every minute.
With the rapid change of the technology from that point on, facilitated the need for the CIO to be well educated in the way equipment works, the Internet works and must be able to orchestrate workers that can evaluate and operate this equipment and keep the information secure.
