She held a seat as an academic serving as the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts. She held it since 2013. She is an active consumer protection advocate whose effort led to the conception and establishment of the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Following the 2008 financial catastrophe, Warren served as chair to the Congressional Oversight Panel, which was created to supervise the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
She then served as Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the treasury secretary for the consumer financial protection bureau, which was under President Barack Obama. In 2011, Warren announced her candidacy for the Senate. She won the general election in 2012. She became the first female US Senator from Massachusetts.
