The most substantial body in the asteroid belt is Ceres, with a diameter of about 950kn. Although it was considered to be an asteroid, Ceres was classified as a "dwarf planet" in August 2006. Ceres is covered in ice volcanoes which is important for studying ice volcanoes in general. A new dome forms on Ceres every 50 million years, on average.
The asteroid then spits out around ten thousand cubic meters of ice per year. Based on the ice content and size of these domes, it appears hundreds of millions of years old. Ceres is about one quarter the size of the moon. It orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter in the region called the asteroid belt.
