There are different things that people believe in regarding the start of the universe. One of the theories used is the Big Bang Theory. According to this theory, 15 billion years ago, life did not exist but there was a loud explosion that has caused the change to the universe.
Another theory is the geocentric model wherein all of the planets have gone around the sun but there was a cosmic explosion that caused life to take place on earth. Of course, there is also the theory used in religion wherein God created everything that is available in this world in 7 days. People can believe in different theories. It is always their decision which one they find most conducive.
