There was a time when people assumed that Mars is not very geologically active. As more and more explorations occurred, people have realized that it is more active than they thought. There are a lot of volcanoes in the area and the continuous running water has allowed the surface of Mars to be shaped.

Some studies are showing that the volcanoes may have been active recently. The volcanoes that can be seen on Mars are considered to be larger as compared to the ones that can be seen on earth. The explanation for this is the number of tectonic boundaries that are available. There is a fewer number that can be seen on Mars as compared to the one on earth.
