Mercury is a planet that we hear often simply because when naming the planets, it is the first planet we name because it is the closest planet to the sun. On planets in our solar system, we name the different parts after different things and people. Each crater on this planet is named. They are mostly named after famous people. They were discovered during different years dating very far back.

The planets were obviously named as well. The name of the planet came from the ancient Romans. As far back as ancient history, these people were observing the planets that they could see. Mercury was one of them and they named this planet after the Roman god Mercury. This god ran fast and was the messenger.
