Ability to achieve status depends upon the status criteria of the larger society If people lack the means to achieve status, they may develop their own criteria, but if their criteria conflict, getting status from one means loss from the other Solution is to invent own status system and repudiate that of the larger group Working-class kids are less able to achieve status in the eyes of middle-class If they aspire to middle-class goals they encounter status-frustration, but by joining the criminal sub-culture they can obtain status (e.g. ability to fight) This helps explain why so much juvenile crime isnt really about money (e.g. joy-riding or short-term motor vehicle theft)
