Brazil is the most densely populated country on the continent, and the official language of Brazil is still Portuguese, even though Brazil gained its independence from Portugal in 1822. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world.
Brazil is unique in the Americas because following its independence from Portugal it did not fragment in two separate countries as did British and Spanish possessions and the region. However, it retained its identity through several different forms of government. The Brazilian landscape is quite diverse and complex.
