Light travels at a speed of 3 into 10 at the power of 8 meters per second. This means that as the light travels the distance from the sun to the earth it takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach the earth. So, for instance, if the sun were to suddenly go out, we wouldn’t know it until 8 minutes and 20 seconds later.
Although it is a little weird to know this fact, but light travels in the form of waves. It takes time for these waves to traverse the immense distance between the sun and the earth and reach us. It is faster than the speed of sound.
