Brown rice is beneficial to the cardiovascular, digestive, nervous systems and the brain and it is a very healthy grain. White rice is more plentiful and available on the supermarket shelves than the brown rice. White rice is also less expensive than brown rice. White rice is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes while eating brown rice has the opposite effect; however, brown rice has a shorter shelf life.

Brown rice has a mild, nutty taste and chewy texture. White rice is blander in comparison. White rice has been stripped of nutrients. This is because white rice has the husk, bran layer and the germ removed, whereas brown rice is whole grain with only the hull removed.
