For public safety, hurricanes are assigned names. Giving hurricanes specific names makes it easier for the media to report the storm and increase interest in warnings when the storm has a name. Hurricane names are chosen upon the request of the country's representative at annual meetings of a WMO committee called the Regional Association IV Hurricane Committee.
This process is done when a storm has been so damaging that the future use of its name is considered to be insensitive. Different systems are used to assign names. For example, some of the names of hurricanes are named after the Army/Navy alphabet.
