The pituitary gland is a tiny sized gland which sits in a protective bony enclosure called the Sella turcica. It is composed of three lobes which include anterior, intermediate, and posterior. In most animals, these three lobes are distinct. Regulatory hormones control endocrine cells, and these hormones are released by specific cells in the brain.
The anterior pituitary synthesizes and secretes hormones, one significant one being the human growth hormone of hGH. Other important hormones secreted by the pituitary are Prolactin, and the Thyroid stimulating hormone. Hormones play a crucial part in the proper functioning of the systems in the body. Hormones regulate your blood pressure, body temperature, the conversion of foods into energy, and the conception and birth of a baby.
