The accordion has customarily been used to perform folk or ethnic music, popular music, and transcriptions from operatic and light classical music repertoire. Today, the instrument can be heard in serious musical concerts. The instrument has grown popular among classical composers. The first composer to write primarily for the chromatic accordion was Paul Hindemith.
The earliest surviving concert piece was written in 1836 by Louise Reisner of Paris. Today, the instrument is sometimes heard in contemporary pop styles, such as rock and pop rock. The instrument is still frequently used during live performances, and it continues to make appearances in classical concerts.
